The Book of Cold Cases by Simone St. James
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Description:
In 1977, Claire Lake, Oregon, was shaken by the Lady Killer Murders: Two men, seemingly randomly, were murdered with the same gun, with strange notes left behind. Beth Greer was the perfect suspect--a rich, eccentric twenty-three-year-old woman, seen fleeing one of the crimes. But she was acquitted, and she retreated to the isolation of her mansion.
Oregon, 2017. Shea Collins is a receptionist, but by night, she runs a true crime website, the Book of Cold Cases--a passion fueled by the attempted abduction she escaped as a child. When she meets Beth by chance, Shea asks her for an interview. To Shea's surprise, Beth says yes.
They meet regularly at Beth's mansion, though Shea is never comfortable there. Items move when she's not looking, and she could swear she's seen a girl outside the window. The allure of learning the truth about the case from the smart, charming Beth is too much to resist, but even as they grow closer, Shea senses something isn't right. Is she making friends with a manipulative murderer, or are there other dangers lurking in the darkness of the Greer house?
Review:
This was my first read from Simone St. James and after reading this book, I'm definitely going to read another book of hers.
*spoilers ahead*
Shea was apart of an attempted abduction as a child and that is why she has interests in cold cases. Although that's a horrible reason, I'm glad the author had a reason for Shea's interest other than for fun. At first I really didn't have an idea that Beth took the blame for someone else killing her parents and the other people. But once Lily was introduced to the story, things intensified. Personally, I do believe that ghosts exist and that they can manipulate objects. I'm not quite sure I believe that they can hurt people, for example Shea and the cliff. As for Beth, I think that it was valid for her to feel like everything with her sister was her fault, but the readers know it wasn't. What she did to her sister was obviously horrible, but can you blame her? Lily would have continued to murder people anyways and she haunts Beth regardless. To be honest, I liked Beth's character and I was fstow when she died. Lily's character was wild but her story was also sad and it's horrible/sad that she spent so much time hurting others because she was hurting. Overall, I would recommend this book!
